The country of the Cherokee people spread from Kentucky to the Carolinas, and covered all of North Georgia. The land the Cherokee called home helped to shape their identities and mold their values. As white settlers encroached, the Cherokee did not waiver, but adapted to their constantly changing environment. We are Still Here explores the history of the Cherokee people and their contemporary culture. This tour, ideal for 2nd–5th graders, explores the past and present of the Cherokee people.
We are Still Here is a 2-hour immersive experience in which students engage with the content through multiple learning styles. Strolling through Swan Woods, students hear the Cherokee story of how animals created the land and begin to understand the value of the oral tradition. Students roll up their sleeves as they take on the role of archaeologist and get hands-on experience with artifacts used by the Cherokee, both before and after the arrival of European settlers. Later, students learn the teachings of Sequoyah and his syllabary through an engaging and educational dramatic piece. Students travel outside to the Wood Cabin to see an example of a 1800s homestead. There, they are transported to the 1830s to hear the story of Cherokee family removed from their home during the Trail of Tears in this unique museum theater performance. Finally, students see that, even with the challenges the Cherokee faced, their culture and values have been preserved and remain strong today.
