Urban History and Culture

From trails to rails to highways, landing strips, and the infobahn, Atlanta’s urban growth extends from the Creek Indians – our Native American forebears – to right now and looking to the future! As a once-and-ever transportation center, Atlanta is a place where an incredible variety of peoples have gathered, passed through, moved on, settled, and lived. Over that time the only constant is change, as artifacts document enslaved people, segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement. It also shows the transformations in the city’s ethnic population, women’s suffrage, and advances in the LGBTQ community. The Urban History and Culture Collection strives to keep something of all of those, past and present, who created and continue to shape the changing story of the city and region.
